Score Your AFT
MDL · HRP · SDC · PLK · 2MRWhat is the Army Fitness Test (AFT)?
The Army Fitness Test (AFT) is the Army’s test of record for physical readiness, replacing the six-event Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) on June 1, 2025. The AFT dropped the Standing Power Throw and scores five events — deadlift, push-up, sprint-drag-carry, plank, and the two-mile run — each worth up to 100 points, for a maximum total of 500. For a deeper breakdown of every event and the current pass line, see the full AFT score chart on AFTScore.
The five AFT events
| Event | What it measures | How it’s scored |
|---|---|---|
| 3-Rep Max Deadlift (MDL) | Lower-body and posterior-chain strength | Heaviest 3-rep hex-bar lift, in pounds |
| Hand-Release Push-Up (HRP) | Upper-body muscular endurance | Max reps in 2 minutes |
| Sprint-Drag-Carry (SDC) | Anaerobic power, speed, agility | Elapsed time, lower is better |
| Plank (PLK) | Core and trunk stability | Time held, longer is better |
| Two-Mile Run (2MR) | Aerobic endurance | Elapsed time, lower is better |
Soldiers with an approved permanent profile can substitute a Go/No-Go alternate aerobic event — a 2.5-mile walk, 12km bike, 1km swim, or 5km row — for the two-mile run. Alternate events don’t count toward the 465-point body-composition exemption; only the five primary events qualify. AFTScore keeps a running AFT standards page if you need the alternate-event cutoffs for your age group.
General standard vs. Combat MOS standard
Every Soldier needs at least 60 points on each of the five events — scoring below 60 on a single event fails the whole test, regardless of total. Beyond that floor, there are two standards:
- General standard — 300 points minimum, normed by both age and sex. This applies to most Soldiers.
- Combat standard — 350 points minimum, sex-neutral but still age-normed. This applies to Soldiers in the designated combat MOSs, effective January 1, 2026 for the active component and June 1, 2026 for the Reserve and National Guard.
Score 465 or higher with a Go on every individual event and you’re exempt from body-composition assessment for that testing cycle under AR 600-9. Run the numbers above with your own results, then cross-check the exemption line on AFTScore’s AFT calculator.
Training priorities by event
- Train the deadlift on an actual hex bar — grip and bar path differ enough from a straight bar to change your working max.
- Run the full SDC course, not substitute conditioning — the transitions between sprint, drag, shuffle, and carry are where most time gets lost.
- Add plank time weekly in small increments; most Soldiers move from a bare pass into the 80-point range within six to eight weeks.
- Mix interval and tempo runs for the 2MR — steady-state mileage alone rarely moves a sub-16-minute goal.
- Re-test every four to six weeks and let your weakest event set the next training block.
Frequently asked questions
Is the AFT the same as the ACFT?
No. The AFT replaced the ACFT on June 1, 2025. It kept four of the six original events, removed the Standing Power Throw, and added a separate 350-point sex-neutral standard for combat MOSs.
What’s the minimum score to pass the AFT?
60 points on every one of the five events, plus a 300-point total under the General standard or 350 under the Combat standard. Failing any single event fails the test even if the total clears the bar.
Do men and women take different tests?
Under the General standard, four of the five events are normed separately by sex (the plank uses one standard for both). Under the Combat standard, everyone is scored on the same sex-neutral table.
What happens if I fail the AFT?
The Army provides remedial training and a retest opportunity. Soldiers in combat MOSs who don’t meet the combat standard by the effective date are subject to administrative action, including possible reclassification.
